Professor and Chair of Film and Media Studies at the University of California-Irvine, Fatimah Tobing Rony, will read from her new book, How Do We Look?, and screen her multi-award winning short animated film, Annah la Javanaise, about a trafficked 13-year old girl who was found wandering the streets of Paris in 1893 and became the maid and model of painter Paul Gaugin.
This program shares an approach to the topic of the representation of women of color explored in the Wallach Art Gallery's major exhibition Posing Modernity and it's companion catalogue.
ARTISTS at RISK (AR) is a non-profit organization at the intersection of human rights and the arts. Since 2013 AR has been collaborating with arts non-profits and government funders to assist artists who are at risk politically and fleeing oppression and war in 26 locations in 19 countries globally.
