Gina Malek: Traces

Malek’s paintings provide glimpses into the energy and stillness of domestic spaces. In her own words, she is “drawn to people who spend a lot of time in one place.” The artist not only observes, but also experiences and suggests through her brushstrokes. With expressive swathes of color and crucial touches of markmaking, she captures the body’s weight, tensions, awkwardness, and grace. Breaking down interiors into harmonic compositions, Malek envisions the human form at rest, struggling to walk, and in an intimate embrace.
