Into Darkness: exploring me and finding you

Experimental choreographers reimagine darkness as a conceptual framework to explore new identity formations connected to East Asia. Ranging from Japanese butoh “dance of darkness” to transcultural experiments in mourning, this exhibition takes the form of a program series consisting of new performances by Aurelius Carson (Douglas, GA, b. 1973), Dean Moss (Tacoma, WA, b. 1954), Eiko Otake (Tokyo, b. 1952) and DonChristian (Germantown, PA, b. 1989). Otake and DonChristian reflect on trauma and violence through corporeal expressions of mourning rooted in sustained slowness; Carson considers the aesthetic, cultural, and social (im)possibilities in dance history; and Moss investigates the experience of assimilation and fluidity of self. Together, these artists blur social and geographical boundaries in their work, resisting the notion of a fixed identity. Into Darkness celebrates their current contributions to the field of contemporary art and probes darkness as a source of uncertainty, empowerment, and freedom.
